Titan Poker, the largest poker room on the iPoker Network, presented talented poker player Greg Metzak with a cheque for 40,000 Euros (more than $61,500) this week at the Eurocity Poker Tour (ECPT) in Madrid. Greg, a 23 year-old psychology student from Canada, won his seat to Madrid at an online freeroll tournament staged by Titan Poker exclusively for its top VIP Players. The skilled poker player was one of 66 players sent by Titan Poker to the ECPT Madrid Open, an exclusive tournament sponsored by the popular poker room at the Casino Gran Madrid, about 30 kilometers outside the city center. Poker enthusiasts from across the globe flew to Madrid this week for this exciting event.

For Greg Metzak, it was not only his first ever experience at a live tournament; it was also his first ever trip to Europe. Despite this, he succeeded in defeating experienced and professional poker players to claim the first prize of 40,000 Euros. He said: “Thanks to Titan Poker, I have had a week in Madrid and now 40,000 Euros - who could ask for more?”

Despite his outstanding victory, Greg plans to initially keep quiet about his success to his friends and relatives in Canada. He added: “I think I am going to wait until I get home and when people ask how it was, say ‘well, you know…poker’s a tough game…anything can happen…’

Titan Poker player Ingo Nassall from Germany finished in second place and took home a prize of 23,000 Euros.

A full report on the Eurocity Poker Tour Madrid Open has been posted on the Titan Poker website.

Canadian Governments Could Have Shared In Kahnawake Success

Posted in Casino News by admin

The Gazette newspaper in Montreal continues to unearth online gambling gems in its ongoing coverage of the Canadian Gaming Summit currently taking place in that city. The latest concerns an offer by the Mohawks to include the Ottawa or Quebec governments in its successful foray into Internet gambling back in 1999.

The newspaper reports that former Kahnawake Grand Chief Joe Norton told a standing-room only session at the conference on aboriginal gaming that a draft document between Quebec and Kahnawake was reluctantly rejected by the province just as the Mohawks were launching Mohawk Internet Technologies and an ultimately lucrative business.

“We offered both Canada and Quebec an opportunity to be a partner with us (in the venture) but they wouldn’t,” said Norton, who described MIT’s computer servers that host gambling sites as “the jewel” of the community’s gambling operations.

While both federal and provincial governments contend that only Quebec has jurisdiction over gambling within the province, MIT has operated unchallenged for almost a decade, The Gazette adds, claiming that pressure is growing in Canada to either stamp out online gambling or change legislation that would allow other players, such as horse-racing tracks, to compete for its profits.

At the conference, ex-chief Norton and lawyer Morden Lazarus, who has represented Kahnawake, urged that legislation “or a mechanism” be enacted to recognise gambling as a legitimate aboriginal activity under the Canadian constitution.

Norton assured delegates to the Canadian Gaming Summit that in the late 1990s, his band council was “very transparent with Canada and Quebec” about MIT, which is overseen by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission. The former chief revealed that numerous meetings were held, and that the project had been “tossed between Canada and Quebec” but ultimately left for the Quebec provincial authorities to decide.

In an interview with The Gazette, Norton said that former Native Affairs Minister Guy Chevrette told him that he was personally in favour of signing a draft document that addressed Kahnawake’s gambling ventures and “created a relationship between Quebec and Kahnawake,” but didn’t provide for revenue-sharing.

After extensive debate and delays, Norton claims that Chevrette said: “I’m sorry, I’ve been advised as a minister, that this (gambling within the Mohawk reserve) is illegal and I can’t sign it.”

The newspaper reports that although Norton declined to reveal MIT’s revenues, in 2006 MIT’s operator - Continent 8 Technologies PLC - issued a prospectus for potential investors in anticipation of going public. This apparently claimed that MIT posted an annual net profit of $17.4 million U.S. on revenue of $24.7 million U.S. that year.

Younger Canadians Favour Online Gambling

Posted in Casino News by admin

In Canada, a national survey has found that young adults are more interested in ‘technology driven’ options such as online gambling than are their older counterparts.
According to a piece in the Montreal Gazette, pollster Allan Gregg told the 2008 Canadian Gaming Summit that one-third of Canadians said that they are gambling less than they did three years ago while those under 35 are more likely to be gambling more.

He told about 200 Summit participants that online sportsbetting and web-based poker games were considered acceptable forms of gambling by 56 per cent of those aged 18 to 34, according to a recent survey of 3,047 Canadians.

But, the same survey found that only 20 per cent of those over 55 and just 35 percent of those over 35 favoured online sports wagering. He stated that younger people were also more supportive of interactive online lottery games, buying lottery tickets through a mobile device or playing casino games for money via in-home televisions.

Paul Burns, Vice-President of the Canadian Gaming Association, told the newspaper that, although current laws prohibit most forms of electronic or online gambling in Canada, citizens spend up to $400 million a year over the Internet by accessing computer servers based in foreign jurisdictions or on the Mohawk reserve of Kahnawake.

Former chief urges change in Canadian gambling laws

Posted in Casino News by Kate Adams

QUEBEC — As reported by the Montreal Gazette: “In 1999, the Parti Québécois government came close to recognizing the right of Kahnawake Mohawks to control gambling operations, including a controversial venture that has become a global hub in the billion-dollar online gambling sector, an industry conference was told yesterday.

“Former Kahnawake Grand Chief Joe Norton told a standing-room only session on aboriginal gaming that a draft document between Quebec and Kahnawake was reluctantly rejected by the province just as the Mohawks were launching Mohawk Internet Technologies.

“…While both governments contend that only Quebec has jurisdiction over gambling within the province, MIT has operated, unchallenged for almost a decade.

“…Yesterday, Norton and lawyer Morden (Cookie) Lazarus, who has acted for Kahnawake, urged that legislatiom ‘or a mechanism’ be enacted to recognize gambling as a legitimate aboriginal activity under the Canadian constitution.

“…MIT is a sophisticated operation using fibre optics and overseen by the Kahnawake gaming commission…”
